This morning, as we brought our first Euro Game Jam to a close, I was struck by the difference between what could be seen on the surface and what was really happening underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the surface, there were screens, controllers, competition and games. Underneath, young people were thinking strategically, making decisions under pressure, solving technical problems, testing ideas, working in teams and creating something that did not exist before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With more than 230 registrations in its first year, the response revealed a depth of interest and talent among Bahrain’s young people. It also raised an important question – one that many parents will quite reasonably ask: can an interest in gaming really lead to a meaningful professional career?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a parent, I understand the concern. A passion is not yet a career plan. Enjoying games does not automatically mean that a young person is ready for serious academic study or professional work. Nor should we pretend that every talented player will become a professional esports athlete. That pathway is highly competitive and, for most, will remain an ambition rather than an occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that is only a small part of the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The more useful distinction is not between gaming and a ‘real career’. It is between consuming technology and learning how to create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modern games are among the most complex digital products we use. Building one can bring together computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, graphics, animation, storytelling, sound, psychology, interaction design and business. A development team needs programmers, designers, artists, testers, producers and project leaders. It needs people who can solve difficult problems, collaborate across disciplines and keep improving a product through repeated testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are not entertainment-only skills. They are part of the wider creative technology economy. The same foundations support work in software development, virtual and augmented reality, simulation, user experience, interactive media, education and training. A graduate may enter the games industry, but the technical capabilities developed through a rigorous computer science education travel much further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why the academic pathway matters so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bahrain is beginning to build valuable continuity. Through the Ministry of Education’s Gaming 100 elective, students can move from gaming history and mechanics into coding, design and the creation of a playable prototype. Euro Game Jam then gives young people a place to test their ability, meet others with similar ambitions and experience the discipline of competition and development. University can deepen that interest into expertise, while industry provides context, standards and opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From this autumn, EUB will offer the University of London BSc Computer Science with specialism in Games Development, the first programme of its kind in Bahrain. It is important to be clear about what this is: not a degree in playing games, but a rigorous computer science degree taught through one of the most demanding applications of computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students build foundations in programming, computational mathematics, algorithms, data structures, software development, computer security and graphics programming. They then move into areas including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, games development, 3D graphics and animation and interaction design, before completing a substantial final project. They do not simply say they are creative or technically capable. They have to demonstrate it by building, testing and presenting real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For parents considering this field with their sons and daughters, I would ask four practical questions. Is the programme grounded in serious computer science? Will the student build a portfolio that demonstrates what they can do? Are there meaningful links to industry and practical experience? And will the skills remain valuable even if the student’s eventual career takes them beyond gaming?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those questions protect against hype. They also reveal why a strong games development pathway can be a sensible choice. It combines enthusiasm with academic depth, creativity with technical discipline and personal interest with capabilities that employers can recognise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Euro Game Jam did not prove that every participant will build a career in gaming. It showed something more useful: the talent, curiosity and appetite already exist. Our responsibility is to help young people turn those qualities into knowledge, evidence and opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This morning, some participants left with prizes and scholarships. Everyone left with experience. Some may return next year as stronger competitors. In time, others may return as mentors, developers, founders or employers creating opportunities for the generation that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Playing may be where the interest begins. Creating is where education starts – and where a serious professional future can take shape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
